Marine Spatial Planning for Offshore Wind Development in Gujarat – 2025 Update
The Danish Energy Agency, under the India-Denmark Energy Partnership Programme, has released the updated Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) report for offshore wind development in Gujarat. This revision builds on the 2023 study and incorporates new data on wind resources, water depth, environmental constraints, and stakeholder interests.
Key Highlights:
- Potential Capacity: Identified offshore zones could host 11.8 GW of bottom-fixed turbines, in addition to the 0.5 GW VGF site already tendered.
- Focus Areas: Offshore zones beyond the 12 nautical mile boundary are prioritized due to fewer conflicts compared to nearshore areas.
- Challenges: Nearshore zones face significant restrictions related to aviation, military clearance, environmental sensitivity, fisheries, and tourism.
Recommendations:
- Reserve offshore sea space through political agreements.
- Begin development with the most cost-effective sites.
- Engage stakeholders early to mitigate risks.
- Conduct detailed site investigations and environmental assessments.
This study underscores Gujarat’s potential for offshore wind energy and calls for clear government direction to balance competing marine uses.
